THE VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK: Fifty-five miles northeast of Las Vegas and six miles from Lake Mead lies Nevada's oldest and largest state park, Valley of Fire. The valley derives its name from the red sandstone formations, created 150 million years ago by gigantic shifting sand dunes, which lie against the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert. The unususal shapes and hollows in the rocks are the result of shifting and fault movements in the region, as well as extensive wind and water erosion. People inhabited Valley of Fire from 300 B.C. to 1150 A.D. and included the Basket Makers, an early Anasazi tribal culture renowned for its use of wicker basketry, and later the Anasazi Pueblo farmers from the nearby, fertile Moapa Valley. These ancient Native Americans left petrified wood and Indian petroglyph—indigenous art work carved into rock—and can still be viewed throughout the park today.
The park is open to the public for camping, hiking and photographing the unique landscape and wildlife inside this magnificant piece of Nevada history; parks.nv.gov./vf.htm.
