The television beauty talks about her new clothing line, the possibility of a Vegas wedding, and the difficulty of being Latin in America

n an era when every star is also seemingly a high-end fashion designer (Beyoncé, J. Lo, Gwen Stefani and Nicky Hilton, to toss out a few), it’s refreshing to hear that Daisy Fuentes’ new line of clothes is for the so-called little people, not the glitterati with gold cards. In fact, Fuentes, a down-home kind of girl “who happens to be on TV,” is selling her eponymous collection at the reasonably priced Kohl’s department-store chain (including three locally: North Summerlin, Green Valley and Northwest Las Vegas). Accordingly, the former MTV and CNBC personality and part-time actress is keeping her price point low (frocks range from $15 to $50) and targeting “real” women with curves, breasts and butts.

Ostensibly, Fuentes, a curvaceous cutie herself, has been in the fashion business her entire career, as a hostess of MTV’s House of Style and model for magazines like Stuff and Shape and products such as Revlon and Pantene. So this foray into fashion (she teamed up with Regatta USA) isn’t so jarring for the Cuban-born Fuentes. After all, this month she is emceeing the Miss Universe Pageant live from Ecuador, and style plays a big part in the festivities. Furthermore, the always perky brunette modeled her line after the comfortably chic clothes she found hanging in her own closet.

Aside from channeling her inner Liz Claiborne, Fuentes is also a role model for the Latin community, seeing her ascent into show business as an example for many to follow. Although she argues that there is much more to be done in order to make America more well-rounded and tolerant of other cultures, she has certainly come a long way from her days as a weathergirl on Univision in New York. And while she doesn’t aspire to the type of fame Lopez enjoys (auditioning makes her physically ill), she is still searching for the right television niche for her brand of honest and charming entertainment.
